Hindi Hanuman Chalisa Meaning in English
Composed by the 16th-century saint Tulsidas, the Chalisa consists of 40 verses (hence the name “Chalisa”) that praise Lord Hanuman’s divine qualities, his heroic deeds, and his spiritual significance.
दोहा (Opening Couplets)
1.
श्रीगुरु चरन सरोज रज, निज मनु मुकुरु सुधारि।
बरनउँ रघुबर बिमल जसु, जो दायकु फल चारि॥
(I cleanse my mind with the dust of my Guru’s lotus feet and describe the pure glory of Lord Ram, which bestows the four fruits of life.)
2.
बुद्धिहीन तनु जानिके, सुमिरौं पवन-कुमार।
बल बुद्धि विद्या देहु मोहिं, हरहु कलेस बिकार॥
(Knowing myself ignorant, I meditate on Hanuman, the son of the Wind God. Please grant me strength, wisdom, and knowledge, and remove my sorrows.)
चौपाई (40 Verses)
1.
जय हनुमान ज्ञान गुण सागर।
जय कपीस तिहुँ लोक उजागर॥
(Hail Hanuman, the ocean of wisdom and virtue, the lord of monkeys, and the one who illuminates the three worlds.)
2.
राम दूत अतुलित बलधामा।
अंजनि-पुत्र पवनसुत नामा॥
(You are Lord Ram’s messenger, a storehouse of immense strength, and the son of Anjana and the Wind God.)
3.
महाबीर बिक्रम बजरंगी।
कुमति निवार सुमति के संगी॥
(O mighty and valiant Hanuman with a thunderbolt-like body, you remove evil thoughts and are a companion to those with good sense.)
4.
कंचन बरन बिराज सुबेसा।
कानन कुंडल कुंचित केसा॥
(Your golden complexion radiates beauty, adorned with earrings, and your curly hair adds to your charm.)
5.
हाथ वज्र औ ध्वजा बिराजे।
कांधे मूंज जनेऊ साजे॥
(You carry a thunderbolt and a flag in your hands, and a sacred thread adorns your shoulder.)
6.
शंकर सुवन केसरी नंदन।
तेज प्रताप महा जग बंदन॥
(You are the divine incarnation of Lord Shiva, the son of Kesari, and the whole world reveres your glory and might.)
7.
विद्यावान गुणी अति चातुर।
राम काज करिबे को आतुर॥
(You are wise, virtuous, and extremely clever, always eager to serve Lord Ram.)
8.
प्रभु चरित्र सुनिबे को रसिया।
राम लखन सीता मन बसिया॥
(You delight in listening to the stories of Lord Ram and reside in the hearts of Ram, Lakshman, and Sita.)
9.
सूक्ष्म रूप धरि सियहिं दिखावा।
बिकट रूप धरि लंक जरावा॥
(You assumed a tiny form to appear before Sita and a colossal form to burn Lanka.)
10.
भीम रूप धरि असुर संहारे।
रामचंद्र के काज सवारे॥
(In a fearsome form, you destroyed demons and accomplished Lord Ram’s tasks.)
11.
लाय सजीवन लखन जियाये।
श्रीरघुवीर हरषि उर लाये॥
(You brought the Sanjeevani herb to revive Lakshman, and Lord Ram joyfully embraced you.)
12.
रघुपति कीन्ही बहुत बढ़ाई।
तुम मम प्रिय भरतहि सम भाई॥
(Lord Ram praised you greatly, saying you are as dear to him as his brother Bharat.)
13.
सहस बदन तुम्हरो जस गावैं।
अस कहि श्रीपति कंठ लगावैं॥
(With a thousand mouths, Lord Vishnu sings your glory and lovingly embraces you.)
14.
सनकादिक ब्रह्मादि मुनीसा।
नारद सारद सहित अहीसा॥
(Sages like Sanaka, Brahma, Narada, Saraswati, and Sheshnag sing your praises.)
15.
जम कुबेर दिगपाल जहां ते।
कवि कोविद कहि सके कहां ते॥
(Yama, Kubera, and the guardians of the directions praise you, but even poets cannot describe your glories fully.)
16.
तुम उपकार सुग्रीवहिं कीन्हा।
राम मिलाय राजपद दीन्हा॥
(You helped Sugriva by introducing him to Lord Ram, who restored his kingdom.)
17.
तुम्हरो मंत्र विभीषण माना।
लंकेस्वर भए सब जग जाना॥
(Vibhishan followed your advice and became the king of Lanka, as is known throughout the world.)
18.
जुग सहस्र जोजन पर भानू।
लील्यो ताहि मधुर फल जानू॥
(You leapt thousands of miles to swallow the sun, thinking it was a sweet fruit.)
19.
प्रभु मुद्रिका मेलि मुख माहीं।
जलधि लांघि गए अचरज नाहीं॥
(Carrying Lord Ram’s ring in your mouth, you effortlessly crossed the ocean.)
20.
दुर्गम काज जगत के जेते।
सुगम अनुग्रह तुम्हरे तेते॥
(You make the most difficult tasks in the world easy through your grace.)
21.
राम दुआरे तुम रखवारे।
होत न आज्ञा बिनु पैसारे॥
(You guard Lord Ram’s door, and no one can enter without your permission.)
22.
सब सुख लहै तुम्हारी सरना।
तुम रक्षक काहू को डरना॥
(Those who seek your refuge enjoy all comforts, as you protect them from all fears.)
23.
आपन तेज सम्हारो आपै।
तीनों लोक हांक ते कांपै॥
(You control your immense power, but your thunderous roar shakes the three worlds.)
24.
भूत पिशाच निकट नहिं आवै।
महाबीर जब नाम सुनावै॥
(Evil spirits and ghosts cannot come near when they hear your mighty name.)
25.
नासै रोग हरै सब पीरा।
जपत निरंतर हनुमत बीरा॥
(Reciting your name continuously cures diseases and removes all suffering.)
26.
संकट तें हनुमान छुड़ावै।
मन क्रम बचन ध्यान जो लावै॥
(Hanuman removes all troubles for those who meditate on him with mind, words, and actions.)
27.
सब पर राम तपस्वी राजा।
तिन के काज सकल तुम साजा॥
(Lord Ram, the ascetic king, is supreme, and you accomplish all his tasks.)
28.
और मनोरथ जो कोई लावै।
सोइ अमित जीवन फल पावै॥
(Whoever seeks you for their desires achieves immense rewards and fulfillment.)
29.
चारों जुग परताप तुम्हारा।
है प्रसिद्ध जगत उजियारा॥
(Your glory shines through all four Yugas, illuminating the world.)
30.
साधु संत के तुम रखवारे।
असुर निकंदन राम दुलारे॥
(You protect saints and sages, destroy demons, and are dear to Lord Ram.)
31.
अष्ट सिद्धि नौ निधि के दाता।
अस बर दीन जानकी माता॥
(Mother Sita blessed you with the power to grant the eight siddhis and nine treasures.)
32.
राम रसायन तुम्हरे पासा।
सदा रहो रघुपति के दासा॥
(You possess the elixir of devotion to Lord Ram and always remain his humble servant.)
33.
तुम्हरे भजन राम को पावै।
जनम जनम के दुख बिसरावै॥
(Devotion to you leads one to Lord Ram and removes sorrows of countless lifetimes.)
34.
अंतकाल रघुबर पुर जाई।
जहां जन्म हरि भक्त कहाई॥
(At life’s end, devotees reach Lord Ram’s abode and are reborn as his devotees.)
35.
और देवता चित्त न धरई।
हनुमत सेई सर्व सुख करई॥
(Devotees do not seek other gods, as Hanuman fulfills all their desires.)
36.
संकट कटै मिटै सब पीरा।
जो सुमिरै हनुमत बलबीरा॥
(All troubles vanish and pains are removed for those who remember Hanuman, the valiant.)
37.
जय जय जय हनुमान गोसाईं।
कृपा करहु गुरुदेव की नाईं॥
(Hail, Hanuman, the lord of the senses! Bless us as a Guru with your grace.)
38.
जो सत बार पाठ कर कोई।
छूटहि बंदि महा सुख होई॥
(Whoever recites this Chalisa a hundred times is freed from bondage and attains great joy.)
39.
जो यह पढ़े हनुमान चालीसा।
होय सिद्धि साखी गौरीसा॥
(Those who recite the Hanuman Chalisa attain success, with Lord Shiva himself as the witness.)
40.
तुलसीदास सदा हरि चेरा।
कीजै नाथ हृदय मह डेरा॥
(Tulsidas, the humble servant of Lord Hari, prays for Hanuman to reside in his heart always.)

पवनतनय संकट हरन, मंगल मूरति रूप।
राम लखन सीता सहित, हृदय बसहु सुर भूप॥
(O son of the Wind God, remover of troubles, and the embodiment of auspiciousness, reside in our hearts with Ram, Lakshman, and Sita.)
